Depth leads it. Reliable water on the plateau is deep, often in the lower Trinity, so there is more hole and more casing than a shallow well needs. Depth is the single biggest driver of the cost.
The rock is next. Hard limestone is slow to drill, so the rig spends more time per foot than it would in soft ground. The same depth costs more here than it would in the blackland to the east.

The Plateau, the Rock, and the Drought
